The answer depends on whether you\u2019re a provisional taxpayer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Who is a provisional taxpayer?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You\u2019re generally a provisional taxpayer if you\u2019re an individual earning more than R30 000 a year from income that isn\u2019t a salary from a PAYE-registered employer. This includes, but isn\u2019t limited to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Income from your own business (sole proprietor)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Rental income<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Proceeds from selling assets<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Interest<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If this sounds like you, you must submit a provisional tax return twice a year, in August and February. You also get extra time to file your annual income tax return.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you\u2019re a provisional taxpayer, you can start gathering your business income and expense records, rental statements, tax certificates from your bank and investments, and paperwork for any assets you sold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What about salaried employees?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you only earn a salary and aren\u2019t a provisional taxpayer, your 2026 return is due sooner, by 23 October 2026. That date is coming up fast, so don\u2019t leave it to the last minute.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Key dates at a glance<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>23 October 2026:<\/strong> non-provisional taxpayers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>22 January 2027:<\/strong> provisional taxpayers and trusts<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Why it matters<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Filing late can lead to SARS penalties, so make sure you know which deadline applies to you.
